Notraum
The place
Emergency room ("Notraum" = "emergency room" in German) set at 1911 m in the Karwendel massif (Tyrol, Austria), on the high plateaus of the Karwendel Nature Park — Austria's largest nature park and one of the most extensive protected natural areas in the Northern Alps (727 km²). A notable position in a transit zone between the massif's main refuges (Karwendelhaus, Falkenhütte, Hallerangerhaus, Solsteinhaus). A basic shelter building for hikers and climbers in case of bad weather or necessity, in keeping with the Austrian alpine tradition of the emergency "Notlager." An exceptional mineral setting in the north-eastern Limestone Alps: gleaming limestone walls, summer alpine pastures, high-altitude larches, panorama over the Karwendel's iconic peaks (Birkkarspitze 2749 m, Hohe Warte). Emblematic wildlife: chamois, reintroduced ibex, marmot, golden eagle, bearded vulture (reintroduced to the Alps in 1986), alpine ptarmigan. A stage on the great Karwendel traverses (Adlerweg / Eagle Trail, Via Alpina).
