Nilljochhütte: A Mountain Hut with Traditional Architecture The Nilljochhütte (formerly Niljochhütte until the end of the 2008 season) is a category II mountain hut above the Virgen valley, in East Tyrol, Austria. Nestled on the southern flank of the Großvenediger massif (3657 m) in Hohe Tauern National Park, this hut was rebuilt in 2009-2010 on the site of the old Niljochhütte and inaugurated on June 19, 2010. Description and Access Location: On the southern face of the Großvenediger massif. Routes: Starting point for excursions in the southern Venediger group, such as the ascent of the Wunspitze (3219 m). A variant of the Venediger Höhenweg passes close to the hut. Access: Several routes from the Virgental valley are possible to reach the Nilljochhütte, suited to various difficulty levels. Surroundings and Excursions Proximity: Below the Bonn-Matreier Hütte, with connections possible to several destinations in the area. Excursions: To the Bonn-Matreier Hütte (2750 m), the Eisseehütte (2521 m), the Bodenalm (1954 m), the Sajathütte (2575 m) and the Gottschaunalm (1943 m). Possible ascents of the Hoher Eichham (3371 m), the Wunwand (3061 m), the Wunspitze (3217 m) and the Kuhhaut (3190 m). Costs and Management Rebuilding cost: Not specified.
