The place

DOC hut built in 1963, on a terrace at 800 m above the Ngaawapurua Stream in Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke's Bay): a sunny, flat, sheltered spot. Facilities: wood/coal burner, worktop with sink, rainwater tank. Large camping area around the hut, suitable for larger groups. Fee 10 NZD per adult per night, 5 NZD for ages 5-17, free below that, payable with standard tickets or an annual Backcountry Hut Pass. No booking. On foot from Harkness Hut: 2 h 30 to 3 h 30 along a marked 5.5 km trail. Helipad 30 m in front of the hut (North Island aviation concessionaires). Several access car parks, 4x4 recommended. The Ngaruroro River in this section of the park is not suitable for fording on foot and can become dangerous in high water. Map BJ37, NZTM2000 E1880440, N5652201.
