Muttseehütte
The place
Hut of the Swiss Alpine Club (Winterthur section) at 2501 m at the Kistenpass, in the Glarus Alps, south of Linthal (canton of Glarus). Set on the high Mutten plateau, above the lake of the same name, the Muttsee. 76 beds, dining room for 60 people, winter room with 8 spaces. Staffed from roughly mid-June to mid-October; the rest of the year it is open as a shelter hut (winter room). Built in 1887 at the initiative of Johann Jakob Weber, founder of the Schleife dye works, to plans by Julius Becker — a pioneer of hut construction, owner of a spinning and weaving mill in Linthal and member of the Tödi section of the SAC. Nearby is the longest dam in Switzerland (1054 m); at 2500 m it is also the highest dam in Europe, with views over the multi-lake plateau up to the Tödi and the Clariden.
