MUMC Hut
Mount Feathertop Memorial Hut
The place
Memorial hut of the Melbourne University Mountaineering Club (MUMC Hut, also known as Mt. Feathertop Memorial Hut) located at 1600 m on the North West Spur of Mount Feathertop in the Australian Alps (Bogong region, Victoria). Very distinctive construction: a matte-green geodesic dome with a small vestibule and triangular windows. Capacity of thirty to forty people: a suspended mezzanine for sleeping, an indoor sink with tank water, tables and benches, basic equipment. Built in the 1960s by MUMC members to a design by Peter Kneen, a civil engineering student; more than 200 volunteers carried around 7 tonnes of materials up the mountain on foot. Maintained by MUMC but open year-round to all hikers and ski tourers. Annual tradition of the "Midnight Climb" held every winter near the full moon.
