Mt Hyde Turk

The place

Shelter ("Turk", rescue hut) of the Mountain Turk Club on the Mahu Whenua Traverse at 1,770 metres altitude, the highest point of the chain of five Turks (Otago, South Island, New Zealand). Spectacular views over the upper Shotover River, Mount Aspiring and the peaks of the Southern Alps. Hut set in a small cirque just below the ridge, particularly exposed to weather conditions at this altitude. Five Turks in total, positioned along the alpine traverse of Coronet Peak Station, between 600 and 2,056 metres; volunteer-managed site, minimal equipment, free access.
