The place

Serviced hut with 20 bunks in two rooms operated by the DOC on Great Barrier Island / Aotea (Auckland), at 420 m. Two toilets, gas cooking, two decks with views over the Hauraki Gulf, Little Barrier Island (Hauturu) and the peaks of Great Barrier. Rainwater collected, must be boiled. Access in 3-3.5 hours via Windy Canyon and Palmer's Track, starting from Aotea Road at the top of Whangapoua Hill. Rates until 30 June 2026: adult NZ$25, youth NZ$12.50, children free. Online booking mandatory — no places held for walk-ins. Same-day bookings up to 8pm subject to availability. Backcountry Hut Pass accepted; standard hut tickets not valid.
