The place

Moraine Hut in the Rakaia valley, Methven/Lake Coleridge sector (Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand), at 684 m elevation, on a glacial moraine (post-Pleistocene deposit). Continuous Canterbury cluster (batches 231-294). A DOC hut on or beside a glacial moraine, part of the heritage of the pioneering pastoral explorers of the 19th century (Samuel Butler, writer and farmer, author of Erewhon, 1872).
