Monte-Leone-Hütte
The place
A hut of the Swiss Alpine Club perched at 2848 m on the Italian-Swiss border, in the Simplon Pass area (Valais), at the foot of the Wasenhorn and facing the north face of Monte Leone. The building came from the 1991 conversion of a former Swiss army bunker that watched over the national border; named Monte-Leone-Hütte after the neighbouring peak, it is now run by the Sommartel section of the CAS. A rustic elongated stone hut, with a classic warm atmosphere. Twenty dormitory beds with duvets (sleeping bag liner required), dogs not allowed. Evening meal with starter-main-dessert on request, plus packed lunches and hiking tea. A never-steep approach from the Simplon Pass (2005 m) through a unique high-mountain landscape.

From the Simplon Pass (2005 m), about 2 h 40 / 5 km of steady climbing to the hut.
