Mittelaletschbiwak
The place
An unstaffed high-altitude bivouac of the Swiss Alpine Club, Diablerets section, which stood at 3013 m below the Dreieckhorn, on the left edge of the Mittelaletschgletscher (Valais, Switzerland). Built in September 1977 and inaugurated on 4 June 1978, the shelter offered thirteen beds with no electricity and mainly served as a base for ascents of the Aletschhorn and the Dreieckhorn. Usual approach from Bettmeralp or Fiescheralp/Märjelen crossing the Aletschgletscher then climbing the Mittelaletschgletscher, or from the Jungfraujoch via the Konkordiaplatz. The bivouac was completely destroyed by an avalanche during the winter of 2018/2019; reconstruction remains uncertain to this day. The area still holds its full significance for high-altitude glacier routes in the heart of the Jungfrau-Aletsch massif.
Getting there
Approach from Bettmeralp or Fiescheralp/Märjelen via the Aletschgletscher + Mittelaletschgletscher. Alternative from the Jungfraujoch via the Konkordiaplatz.
The setting
