The place

DOC standard hut with 14 bunks in Tararua Forest Park (Wairarapa, Wellington/Kapiti), at 385 m. Wood stove for heating. DOC has downgraded Mitre Flats Hut from Serviced to Standard — firewood is no longer supplied. Two access routes: from Waingawa Road, 4 h via the Barra Track, or from Holdsworth Road, 4 h via the Atiwhakatu Track. No booking, payment via hut tickets or Backcountry Hut Pass in the honesty box (NZ$10/5 until 30 June 2026). Hunters: store firearms and ammunition separately, bolts removed or actions locked.
