The place
Refuge at 2,060 m of altitude at the Alpe La Balma in the Val Formazza, province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola. Forty-nine beds, historically staffed by mountain guide Cecilia Cova, currently closed pending new management. Crossroads of major alpine routes, base for hiking, wildlife watching, climbing (around two hundred routes), botany, and winter sports (ski touring and snowshoeing).
Getting there
Access on foot from Canza in about 2 h, 600 m elevation gain. Alternative via the valley-floor cable car, then a further 280 m elevation gain (45 min).
A bit of history
Le bâtiment en pierre a été construit à l'origine comme logement pour les ouvriers de la société Edison et pour le gardien du barrage, lors de la construction du barrage du « Polmone » et de la conduite forcée. Il a été cédé aux ACLI (Associazioni Cristiane Lavoratori Italiani) en 1954, puis rénové dans les années 1970 et 1990.
A word from the warden
Ouvert toute l'année sauf mai et novembre, avec un local d'hiver disponible du 8 décembre au 1er mai. 49 places, eau courante, douches chaudes, chauffage électrique, panneaux solaires pour l'eau chaude.
