The place
DOC hut at 980 m in the northeast of Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke's Bay, NZ), on a flat, sheltered site at the boundary between manuka/kanuka scrubland and red beech forest. Built in 1963 by the NZ Forest Service. North-facing covered veranda added in 2003. Open fireplace (rare among former NZFS huts), rainwater tank, benches, meat safe, long drop. Access via Makahu Road 2h30-3h / 5 km; Makahu Saddle Carpark 3h / 5.7 km via Kaweka Flats Bivouac. No booking required: Standard ticket (adults $10, youth $5, under-5 free). Makahu Road is 75 km NW of Napier: ~1h of gravel, river ford, steep and narrow sections, caravans prohibited.
