The place

Five-bunk DOC hut at 982 m in the Whakaari Conservation Area (Otago, Queenstown-Wakatipu area). No bookings: first come first served, payment by tickets in the honesty box or Backcountry Hut Pass. Rate NZD 10 adult and NZD 5 youth (5-17) per night, free below that age. Critical health alert: the Whakaari area is contaminated by former mining operations; filtering or boiling stream water is not enough to neutralize the contamination — bring your own water.
