Mayo Hut
The place
Hut at 247 m on the Heysen Trail (coordinates -31.754693, 138.407845, South Australia). Private property, no vehicle/caravan access. Water, bunks, fireplace, table, seating and toilets. Walk-in camping and a water tank are also available. Capacity for about 10 people on sleeping platforms, plus floor space. Free, no booking. Built in 1899 by the William Mayo family, restored in 1988 as a Bicentennial Project by seven unemployed/homeless people from Adelaide's Wright Court Day Centre, coordinated by Adelaide Central Mission and funded by the Department of Recreation and Sport. Maintained by the Friends of the Heysen Trail; reserved for Heysen walkers and Mawson cyclists.
A bit of history
Built in 1899 by the William Mayo family. Restored in 1988 as a Bicentennial Project by seven homeless people from Adelaide's Wright Court Day Centre (Adelaide Central Mission, Department of Recreation and Sport).
