Maungahuka Hut
The place
Standard 10-bunk hut managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) on the Main Range of Tararua Forest Park, on the boundary of the Wairarapa and Wellington/Kapiti regions (North Island, New Zealand). Built in 2006, replacing a six-bunk structure dating from 1962. No heating: warm clothing recommended, as the exposed altitude makes it cool year-round. Long, demanding access routes: from Otaki Forks in the west, 5-6 hrs to Kime Hut then a further 7-9 hrs to Maungahuka; from Holdsworth Road in the east, 8 hrs to Neill Forks Hut via Totara Flats then a further 3 hrs. Visibility on the ridge is frequently very poor, so the crossing is reserved for experienced, well-equipped trampers, especially in winter. Rates: NZ$10/night adult, NZ$5 youth, payable at the honesty box.

Hut actuel construit en 2006, remplace l'original de 1962 (NZ Forest Service, conception S70, 6 couchettes). Situé sous le sommet Maungahuka (1330m), Tararua Forest Park, Nouvelle-Zélande, sur le tracé Tararua Peaks/Southern Crossing.
