Mataketake Hut
The place
8-bunk "Serviced" hut at 1227 m on the Mataketake Tops Route (Mataketake Range, Haast / South Westland, South Island, New Zealand), opened in February 2021. Owned and maintained by the Backcountry Trust, built by the Andy Dennis Trust — the building honours Dr Andrew (Andy) Dennis, a New Zealand writer, tramper and conservationist who bequeathed funds for it. Access from SH6, 40 km north of Haast (small roadside car park). Two routes lead up to the hut: the Māori Saddle Route and the Mica Mine Route. DOC recommends the Māori Saddle Route for the ascent — it offers the best read of weather conditions on the tops and an easy retreat if needed. Booking required, 8 bunks, bring your own gas stove. A fine library of Andy Dennis's books inside. The hut can get very busy during the Haast Roar (mid-March to mid-April). Snow is common on the approach in winter.
