Matai Bay Hut

The place

DOC hut in the native bush of the splendid Tennyson Inlet (Pelorus Sound, Marlborough), at 5 m altitude. Accessible only by boat, landing on a shingle beach. Nearest boat ramps at Duncan, Penzance and Elaine Bays. Six bunks with mattresses, wood stove (heating only), long-drop toilet, stream water (boil or treat). No dogs allowed. Hunting possible with a DOC permit. Important: standard DOC Backcountry Hut Passes and hut tickets do not apply here — book directly via the Matai Bay Hut Trust website, which manages and maintains the hut. Mooring available. Activities: fishing, hunting, sea kayaking, swimming. Check Marlborough Sounds road conditions after recent weather events.
