Refuge Margherita
The place
Staffed refuge at 4554 m on the Punta Gnifetti (Signalkuppe), in the Monte Rosa massif — the highest refuge in Europe. Inaugurated in 1893 by Queen Margherita of Savoy, who spent a night there. Dedicated to the queen, the building also serves as a scientific observatory. ISO 14001 certified for environmental management. Capacity of 70 beds in shared dormitories in summer season, 10 beds in the winter section (no booking). Summer 2026 rates: half-board €150, €130 for UIAGM guides; overnight + breakfast €130. All access routes cross glaciers and require alpine expertise — strongly recommended to use a certified guide. From the Refuge Gnifetti (4-5 h), from the Monte Rosa Hütte (5 h), or from the Bivacco L. Resegotti via a difficult ridge. Address: Loc. Garstelet, 11020 Gressoney La Trinité, Aosta Valley.
