The place

Backcountry hut on the Waikaremoana Track in Te Urewera (east coast, NZ), at 591 m, 26 bunks. Te Urewera is recognized under New Zealand law as a living entity; managed by Te Uru Taumatua, the operational arm of Ngāi Tūhoe. Fees: adults NZ$35, children (5-17) NZ$18, free for infants. DOC passes not accepted — booking required via the DOC system. Riverside hut in a protected forest environment.
