Maol Bhuide
The place
One of the most remote bothies belonging to the Mountain Bothies Association, at 267 m, in the roadless area between Glen Carron and Glen Shiel (western Highlands, Scotland). Over 10 miles (16 km) of walking by any approach route (south, west or north), surrounded on three sides by watercourses that become serious obstacles at the slightest deterioration in weather. Cottage built in the mid-19th century on the site of a former summer grazing shieling (references dating back to 1654); the last inhabitants, the Burnetts, left in 1916. The name derives from Gaelic: "bhuidhe" means yellow, and "maol" a bald or rounded summit. A surprisingly comfortable bothy given its remoteness: sink, working dunny, three well-drawing fireplaces.

~16 km of walking minimum (south / west / north), tricky water crossings.
