Manuoha Hut
The place
Standard DOC hut at the summit of Mt Manuoha at 1392 m — the highest point in Te Urewera (Hawke's Bay, North Island, New Zealand) — with the last 100 metres above the treeline. Clear views on a fine day of the snow-capped peaks of the central North Island volcanoes to the south, and of the Mahia Peninsula to the east. 6 bunks, a water tank and a small wood stove for heating only — not suited to cooking, bring your own stove. Access via the spectacular Manuoha-Waikareiti Track (32 km, minimum 3 days), reserved for experienced trampers. Important: Te Uru Taumatua (Ngāi Tūhoe) has been progressively decommissioning huts in Te Urewera since 2022; Manuoha Hut is on the list of huts due to disappear, potentially to be replaced by new purpose-built structures — check current status before planning your trip.
