Manson Hut
The place
DOC hut at 1,280 m in "Manson Country" in Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke's Bay, NZ), separated from the main park by the Ngaruroro River. Built in the late 1940s as a musterers' shelter. Major 2003 upgrade: large covered veranda and interior modifications. Wood/coal stove (cooking possible), benches, rainwater tank, long drop. Kennelling under special conditions. Foot access via three routes (2 h 30-3 h 30); helipad 20 m away. 4x4 vehicle recommended for the park roads; seasonal river crossings; forestry operations affecting some car parks. No booking required: Standard ticket (adults $10, youth $5, under-5s free) or Backcountry Hut Pass.
