The place
Basic 2-person DOC bivouac at 1,250 m in the western Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke's Bay, NZ), just inside the forest boundary. Built in 1966 by the NZ Forest Service. Tank water, long drop, meat safe. Free. Helipad 50 m away. 4WD vehicle required — access from the Lakes, Lawrence or Whittle Road car parks (current restrictions possible). Remote base for hunting and exploring the western areas of the park; 2-4 hour stages to neighbouring huts.
