Mangurstadh Bothy
The place
A small "beehive" bothy clinging to the pink Lewisian gneiss cliffs on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis (Outer Hebrides, Scotland), above the hamlet of Mangurstadh. A spectacular clifftop position: Atlantic waves break on the skerries and zawns just below. Built more than thirty years ago by John and Lorna Norgrove, the wood-and-stone shelter built into the rock is known as the "Eagle's Nest"; it has two windows opening onto the ocean, two skylights in the ceiling, and a raised platform for two people with a fireplace. Since 2010, the bothy has also honored the memory of Linda Norgrove, the couple's daughter, an aid worker who died in Afghanistan during an attempted rescue.
