Mangaturuturu Hut
The place
Serviced 8-bunk hut managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in the Ruapehu area of Tongariro National Park (central North Island, New Zealand), at 1,250 metres elevation. Wood burner for heating, firewood supplied annually by helicopter; conserve firewood for the season. Hut resulting from a community effort by the Whanganui Tramping Club, which identified the site in 1955, officially opened on 5 April 1958 after years of fundraising and volunteer work; the club still co-manages it with DOC. Rates until 30 June 2026: NZD 25/night adult, NZD 12.50 youth 5-17, free under 5. Online booking required (bookings open until 30 June 2027), walk-in arrivals turned away if full; same-day booking possible until 8 pm. Te Araroa trampers: separate pass required.
