Mangaturutu Hut

The place

A standard 6-bunk DOC hut at 1,400 m in the Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke's Bay), on a high ridge linking the Ngaruroro and Mohaka basins. Built in 1961, with an open fireplace (rare in older Forest Service huts), bunks, a pantry, a rainwater tank, latrines, firewood provided to be replaced. Basic tools (axe, shovel, broom). 7-11 hours access depending on route (via Makino Hut, Middle Hill Hut or Makahu Saddle). Weather conditions are highly changeable, with possible heavy snow and strong northwesterly winds.
