Mangatoetoe Hut

The place

Standard six-bunk DOC hut in Aorangi Forest Park (Wairarapa). **Built by the NZ Forest Service in 1978**, originally planned as a shelter at Te Kopi but relocated to Mangatoetoe due to erosion; all materials were carried by hand over the final 600 meters. Open-fireplace heating. Access: 1 h 30 from Cape Palliser Road via Mangatoetoe Stream (4.5 km); 2 h 30-3 h 30 to Kawakawa Hut via Aorangi Crossing (6.2 km). Fees (until 30 June 2026) NZ$10/5 adult/youth, free under 4. New rates from 1 July 2026.
