The place

DOC hut in Te Urewera (Bay of Plenty), at 599 m. **Current status to be verified with Ngāi Tūhoe**: Te Uru Taumatua (TUT) decommissioned 29 huts in the park in October-November 2022 (burnt down). The High Court ruled these destructions illegal in 2023 and TUT withdrew its appeal in late 2023, but the situation remains fluid. Te Urewera operates under a unique legal status as a "legal personality" governed by the Te Urewera Board, with day-to-day operations run by Te Uru Taumatua. Check the specific status of Mangatoatoa via the interactive Ngāi Tūhoe map or contact the Te Urewera Visitor Centre (+64 6 837 3803, teureweravc@ngaituhoe.iwi.nz) before setting out. Bring a tent, warm sleeping bag and a distress beacon (no mobile coverage).
