Great Walk serviced hut run by DOC, sleeping 20, in Tongariro National Park (Mangatepopo Valley, Ruapehu), at 1,190 m altitude. Lockwood building **erected in 1974**, the hut closest to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Views of Taranaki Maunga at sunset on clear days. Access: 25 min / 1.7 km from the Mangatepopo Road end; 3-5 h / 9.4 km from Ngauruhoe Place at Whakapapa Village; 5 h / 12 km from Oturere Hut. Open year-round — Great Walks season 23 October-30 April. Rates per person per night: May-October NZ$25 adult (resident and international alike), NZ$12.50 youth, free under 4; October-April NZ$44 resident / NZ$66 international, youth NZ$22 / NZ$33, free under 4. Online booking mandatory, no bunk held without a booking.
