The place

Six-bunk hut with an open fireplace, managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in Raukumara Conservation Park, Ōpōtiki sector on the East Coast (North Island, New Zealand), at 357 metres elevation. Water from the nearby river. Access is 47 km from Ōpōtiki via the Manganuku Track, starting at Manganuku campsite near SH2 and the Manganuku bridge: 1 h on a formed track crossing steep bluffs with some exposure, then a short gorge crossing (requires low water levels) followed by 2 h along the Manganuku Stream to the hut. Free access. Beautiful clearing, whio (blue duck) frequently spotted downstream.
