Mangamate Hut
The place
DOC "Standard" category hut at 740 m in the heart of the podocarp forest of Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park (Bay of Plenty / East Coast, North Island, New Zealand). Originally located beside the Mangamate Stream, the new 9-bunk hut has been relocated higher up on a saddle with a magnificent view over the Whirinaki canopy. Wood stove, sink with running water outside at the end of the deck. At night, glow worms can be seen on the bank along the access trail. First come, first served. Fees: NZD 5 adult / NZD 2.50 youth 11-17 / free 0-10. Main approach via the River Road car park: ~1h walk to a footbridge over the Mangamate Stream, then follow the stream upstream (60+ stream crossings!). Possible stage of the Mangamate Loop Track (3 days).
