The place

Standard DOC hut with six bunks at 237 m in Raukumara Conservation Park (East Coast, North Island, New Zealand), on elevated ground overlooking the Motu-Mangakirikiri confluence. Tank water, open fireplace. Mainly used by hunters and rafters on the Motu River.

Getting there

Free access. Coordinates NZTopo50 BE42: E2010795, N5782361. From the west: descend the Motu River (numerous difficult crossings) or follow the ridge from Takaputahi Road. From the east: 2-3 days of bush travel to Oronui Hut then 4-8 hours to the Mt Hikurangi road end.
