Mangahao Flats Hut

The place

Standard hut with 16 bunks in Tararua Forest Park (Wellington/Kapiti), at 529 m. Maintained by the Manawatu Tramping and Skiing Club. Access from State Highway 57 at Shannon then a winding metalled road past the Mangahao hydroelectric station and its reservoirs. 5-6 hours' walk from the end of the dam road. No booking, payment by hut tickets or Backcountry Hut Pass ($10/5 NZ until 30 June 2026).
