The place

Serviced hut with 18 bunks managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in the Ruapehu area of Tongariro National Park (central North Island, New Zealand), at 1,285 m elevation. Wood burner for heating, with wood supplied annually by helicopter. Rates until 30 June 2026: NZD 25/night adult, NZD 12.50 youth (5-17 years), free under 5. Booking required online (bookings open until 30 June 2027); walk-ins turned away if full, though same-day arrivals accepted until 8 pm if space allows. Te Araroa trampers: a separate pass is required (cannot be combined with the standard hut fee).
