Manaohou Right Branch Hut
The place
Standard six-bunk Department of Conservation hut, set in a small clearing at the heart of Te Urewera (Bay of Plenty, North Island, New Zealand). Located in the middle reaches of the Manaohou Stream, the main tributary of the Whakatane River, whose confluence lies near Hanamahihi Hut. There is no marked track to reach it: as with most Te Urewera routes, you follow the streambed up to the hut, terrain reserved for experienced trampers and hunters. Te Uru Taumatua, the authority managing Te Urewera, launched a program in 2022 to remove 44 huts from the park — check the current status with the DOC or Te Uru Taumatua before setting out.
Getting there
Off-track: follow the Manaohou Stream bed up from its confluence with the Whakatane River. Status has varied since 2022: check with the DOC / Te Uru Taumatua.
