Malga Fornasa Alta
The place
Former alpine hut converted into an open bivouac, owned by the municipality of Fornace, at 1892 m in the Lagorai range between Monte Croce and Fregasoga (Trentino). Two-storey stone-and-timber building, restructured a few years ago as part of a 2008 SAT project that turned it into a bivouac always open to hikers. Inside: two wood stoves, firewood stored outside, gas rings, a sleeping platform upstairs with four bed nets but no mattresses — bring your own mat and sleeping bag. Warms up quickly even in very cold weather. Reached from Malga Valletta Alta via an unmarked path starting at a wooden bridge over the Rio Valletta; from the hut, a path leads in about 1 h to a shepherd's baito at higher altitude. A rare foothold in this wild stretch of the eastern Lagorai.
