The place

Standard DOC hut at 980 m in Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke's Bay, NZ). Wood burner, rainwater tank, meat safe, long drop, dog kennel. Access via Makahu Road 2 h 30 / 5.5 km; Makahu Road end via Te Puia Lodge 3 h 30; via Middle Hill Hut 6 h 30. Makahu Road starts 75 km north-west of Napier; about 1 hour of gravel, river crossings, steep and narrow sections — no caravans or motorhomes. No booking: Standard ticket (adults $10, youth $5, under 5 free) or Backcountry Hut Pass.
