Makaretu Hut

The place

Standard DOC hut with 8 bunks in Ruahine Forest Park (Hawke's Bay), at 600 m of altitude. **Built in 1960** by the NZ Forest Service and renovated by DOC in 2003. Located on the south branch of the Mākāretu River, in a beech forest. Access: 2 h from the park boundary to the Mākāretu forks, then 1 h following the south branch. Alternative access via the river subject to landowner permission. No booking, Standard Hut Ticket in the honesty box (NZ$10/5 adult/youth until 30 June 2026) or Backcountry Hut Pass.
