The place
DOC hut at 980 m in Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke's Bay, NZ). Built in 1957 as the prototype that helped shape the NZ Forest Service's SF70 design. Original open fireplace preserved. Long drop toilet, stream water, meat safe. Access 5 minutes from the Makahu Saddle parking area at the end of Kaweka Road. No booking: Standard ticket (adults $10, youth $5, under-4s free) or Backcountry Hut Pass. Routes: north to Middle Hill Hut (3 h), south via Mackintosh Hut (5-5.5 h), western loops via Back Ridge. Take care on the exposed marked routes in bad weather.
