The place
Standard DOC hut with 8 bunks at 879 m in Kaweka Forest Park (mid-southern Hawke's Bay, NZ). Built in 1959 for deer control: one of the oldest huts in the park. Upgraded in 2003 and 2009. Wood burner (please replace the wood for the next occupants), long drop, water from tank or nearby stream (boil before use). Access: Lakes Road 2-3 h; Lawrence Shelter-Lawrence Roadend 4 h; Makahu Saddle Carpark 3-3.5 h. Mackintosh car park closed due to forestry operations: park at the skid site near the end of Kuripapango Road (+500 m walk). No booking required: Standard ticket (adults $10, youths $5, under 4 free) or Backcountry Hut Pass.
