Macaulay Hut
The place
DOC "Serviced" category hut with 14 bunks at 1037 m, in Te Kahui Kaupeka Conservation Park (Mackenzie Country and Waitaki, Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand), at the northern end of Lake Tekapo. Owned by the Mackenzie Alpine Trust - Lake Tekapo. First come, first served, no bookings; a suggested donation of NZD 10 to be left in the tin box outside. Facilities: kitchen, heating, lighting, mattresses, long-drop toilet, tap water (untreated, boil before drinking). Access on foot, mountain bike, horse or 4x4 via Lilybank Road (gravel road) from SH8 at Tekapo. ~5h one way on foot. Important: crossing the Macaulay River can be difficult, even dangerous, after rain or during snowmelt — not advisable at those times.
