Lochnagar Hut
The place
A historic hut in the Lochnagar block, in the northern Richardson Mountains, bordering Mount Aspiring National Park between the Rees River and the Upper Shotover (Otago, South Island, New Zealand). The area surrounds Lake Lochnagar (known locally as Goat Lake), formed by a massive landslide that dammed the valley to the north. The hut, basic and well known among New Zealand trampers as one of the finest in Otago, serves as a stop on multi-day loops towards Mount Tyndall from Aspiring Hut, crossing passes and off-track terrain. No bookings, gear and supplies must be brought in, self-navigation required.
Getting there
Multi-day approach from Aspiring Hut (Matukituki) via a pass crossing to Lochnagar. Off-track route, advanced tramper level.
The setting
Lake Lochnagar (Goat Lake), northern Richardson Mountains, bordering Mount Aspiring National Park.
