The place
Winter room of the Rifugio Federico Chabod at about 2750 m, in the Gran Paradiso National Park (Valsavarenche, Aosta Valley, Italy). The original building, known as "la Baracca," was rebuilt in 2005-2006 and became the new winter room. Handsome, comfortable, wood-panelled building offering excellent overnight shelter: several beds with blankets and pillows, gas kitchen, wood stove and firewood, crockery and a large communal table. Private indoor sanitation. Capacity about 20 people. Used in winter and spring when the main Chabod refuge is closed, by mountaineers, hikers and ski tourers.
Good to know
For overnight stays and everything the Refuge makes available, the managers kindly ask that a sum of 5€ be left at specific bars, tobacconists, etc., located in Degioz in Valsavaranche (see the note posted inside the winter room).
