The place
Swiss Alpine Club cabin (Tödi section) at 2273 m, at the foot of the Kärpf massif in the Glarus Alps (canton of Glarus). Set right in the Freiberg Kärpf — the oldest wildlife protection area in Switzerland, if not Europe — it serves as a key base for hikes in the area. Founded in 1901 by Captain Mathias Legler, a member of a wealthy textile manufacturing family from Diesbach, the building was completed in 1908 and then donated to the SAC Tödi section. Rebuilt in 2007 without losing any of its original character: modern yet cosily rustic. Capacity of 60 beds in double, quadruple and larger rooms. Open continuously in summer, and on weekends in winter. Around 2h30 approach on foot from Mettmenalp, summer and winter alike.
