Lake Roe Hut

Southland · Nouvelle-Zélande0 mUnguardedVerified listing

The place

DOC hut at 904 m on the Dusky Track in the heart of Fiordland National Park (Southland, South Island, New Zealand). 12 bunks, heating, mattresses, dry toilets, tap water (untreated, boil before use). Remarkable setting among massive granite outcrops, 20 minutes due east of Lake Roe (above). The Dusky Track links Lake Hauroko to Lake Manapouri across huge lakes, flooding rivers, forested valleys and plenty of mud: reserved for experienced, well-equipped trampers in good physical shape, under the guidance of an experienced group leader. This stage runs from Halfway Hut (crossing the Hauroko Burn and a steep climb above the treeline), followed by a long traverse of the Pleasant Range with spectacular views over Tamatea / Dusky Sound as far as Loch Maree Hut. First come, first served at the DOC huts along the route.
