The place

Nature reserve and community campsite at 1515 m near Kibale National Park in Uganda, about 5 km from the park. A non-profit ecotourism project founded in 1991 to protect the ancient forest around a volcanic crater lake: revenue funds conservation and community development. Varied accommodation: camping under trees frequented by monkeys, or an overnight stay in the secluded Lakeside Cottage overlooking the lake. Day entry fees: 10,000 USh for non-residents, 8,000 USh for residents, 2,000 USh for East African visitors, free for overnight guests. Activities: guided forest walks, the Top of the World summit, waterfalls, Kibale chimpanzee trekking, and optional Rwenzori hiking. Protected biodiversity includes the Uganda red colobus and the great blue turaco.
