The place

Basic Hut of the Department of Conservation perched on grassy ridges between the Haupiri and Crooked rivers, in the Otira-Kopara Conservation Forest (West Coast, South Island, New Zealand). Six sleeping spaces in a basic building set in a tussock basin, with a small stream nearby; about 30 minutes' walk away lies Lake Morgan itself. Off-grid (no treated water, no flush toilets), stamped with the standard DOC Basic Hut ticket. A typically off-track approach, fully self-sufficient, in a very lightly visited area west of Arthur's Pass — terrain reserved for experienced trampers comfortable with map navigation.
