Laitasaari autiotupa
The place
Wilderness hut ("autiotupa" — a free-access cabin in Finnish) located near Oulanka National Park (North Ostrobothnia region, Finland, coordinates 65.09 N, 29.10 E — Pudasjärvi / Karhunkierros area). A remarkable position on the routes of the famous Karhunkierros ("Bear's Trail"), Finland's most popular hiking trail, which crosses Oulanka NP — a land of gorges, rapids, primary boreal forest and the Oulankajoki river. Metsähallitus network (Finnish forest administration): an autiotupa is a free open cabin, typically containing bunks, a sturdy table with benches, a small stove and a wood supply with an axe. An exceptional concept inherited from the "Jokamiehenoikeus" (Everyman's Right) guaranteeing free access to nature in Finland for centuries. An exceptional setting: primeval boreal taiga, gorges (kalliokuru), spectacular rapids of the Oulankajoki, iconic wildlife: brown bear, wolverine, boreal lynx, semi-domesticated reindeer, red-throated loon, eagle owl.
