The place
2-bunk bivouac **built in 1960 by the NZ Forest Service** in Ruahine Forest Park (Hawke's Bay), at 1,380 m altitude. Among the highest shelters in the park, exposed to extreme weather conditions (snow, strong winds, rain possible year-round). Rainwater tank. Free. Access from the Mangleton Road-end: Golden Crown Ridge Track behind Masters Shelter up to the ridge, then south via Park's Peak and Upper Makaroro Huts; 20 min from Upper Makaroro heading south along the ridge, then a 10-minute descent along a spur — around 2 h 30 beyond Upper Makaroro from Mangleton.
